Fire risk is HIGH in the Hollywood Hills. Firefighters have been hard at work trying to contain a forest fire near our famous Sign. Please be careful while hiking in the dry hillside and do not bring any open flames (cigarettes, campfires, fireworks) into the park.

Beginning later this year, parking in the Observatory lot, as well as long East and West Observatory roads, and Western Canyon/Fern Dell road will be marked up to $4 an hour, according to the Los Feliz Ledger. No stress though, as you’ll still be able to find free parking in other spots throughout Griffith Park, and will be able to ride a free shuttle from those parking lots up to the Observatory.

Every year in July, we get a slew of requests from reporters wanting to cover the Sign’s birthday. In truth, we have no idea the specific day the Hollywood Sign was unveiled (remember it was a billboard back in the day so not very newsworthy), although through extensive research, we do know it was erected in 1923. So wish it a happy anniversary not a happy birthday!

Griffith Park celebrated the partial solar eclipse in style. The observatory offered glasses, lectures and more for the big universal event, which swept our nation. Reminding us that while Hollywood is full of stars, some of the best ones out there are up in the sky.

A note from Chris Baumgart, Chairman of the Hollywood Sign Trust, on the passing of long time Hollywood Sign Trust supporter and Hollywood icon, Hugh Hefner, who died September 27, 2017 at the age of 91:
“All of us who love the Hollywood Sign–and those who admire it from afar–say, “Hats off to Hugh” for keeping the dream alive on Mt.Lee. In 1978, when the Sign had deteriorated beyond repair, Hugh Hefner said, “Let’s do this right,” and hosted a fundraiser at his famous home. His celebrity guests contributed the funds to build the lasting set of nine letters we see today, and he provided the lead gift to rebuild the “Y” in the Sign. Thirty two years later, when the postcard image of Mt.Lee and the Hollywood Sign was threatened by potential development, Mr. Hefner came forward again and capped the fundraising effort to purchase the land with his closing gift of $1 million. The Hollywood Sign Trust has lost a best friend who has championed the Hollywood Sign for nearly 40 years. We send our sympathy to Hugh Hefner’s family, friends and colleagues.”
